Elon Musk's X to Cease Operations in Brazil Amid Intense Legal Battle

"We are deeply saddened to have reached this decision," the company announced, placing the responsibility "solely" on Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes.

This decision appears to mark the peak of an ongoing legal dispute between Moraes, who claims his efforts are aimed at combating the spread of disinformation online, and Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X.

Earlier this year, Moraes directed X to block certain accounts accused of disseminating false information and hate speech, including some linked to supporters of Brazil’s former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro had repeatedly propagated unfounded allegations that Brazil’s electronic voting system was susceptible to fraud ahead of the closely contested 2022 election.

Months after his defeat by left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro’s supporters, enraged by the election outcome, stormed the country’s top state institutions.

"Freedom of expression does not equate to freedom of aggression," stated Moraes, who also oversees Brazil's Superior Electoral Tribunal.
